A citywide nonprofit partnership that recovers surplus food from retailers and channels it to vetted community kitchens and family support centers.
In partnership with municipal authorities, food retailers, and local charities, the Third Sector Portal designed and launched a coordinated Food Rescue and Redistribution Network to tackle two connected challenges: preventable food waste and food insecurity among low-income households.
The project began with a three-month mapping phase to identify high-volume surplus sources, including supermarkets, hotel kitchens, and event venues. We established collection windows, food safety protocols, and quality standards aligned with local regulations, then trained volunteers and partner staff on sorting, cold-chain handling, and delivery documentation.
A lightweight digital workflow was introduced to track daily pickups, available inventory categories, and receiving capacity at each nonprofit partner. This allowed dispatch teams to route deliveries in near real time and reduce delays. During the first operational quarter, the network completed 420 coordinated pickups and redirected over 68 tons of edible food to 11 community kitchens and 7 family support centers.
Beyond logistics, we developed a public awareness campaign focused on responsible consumption and volunteer engagement. The initiative now serves as a replicable model for cross-sector collaboration, proving that structured partnerships can turn surplus into sustained social value.
