A community-driven environmental volunteering initiative that mobilized hundreds of citizens and residents to participate in sustainability and conservation activities across the UAE.
Environmental sustainability is not only a global imperative but a deeply embedded value within the UAE's national vision. The Green Hands Initiative was born from a partnership between the Third Sector Portal and several environmental civil society organizations with the goal of mobilizing citizens and residents as active stewards of their natural surroundings. The initiative brought together volunteers from diverse backgrounds to participate in organized conservation activities, including coastal clean-ups, tree planting drives, and environmental education sessions held in schools and community hubs.
A key pillar of the initiative was fostering a genuine culture of environmental responsibility — not merely as a one-time act of service, but as an ongoing commitment embedded in daily life. To achieve this, the initiative incorporated awareness workshops that explored topics such as waste reduction, water conservation, and biodiversity protection, all framed within the UAE's broader sustainability agenda and its commitments under international environmental agreements.
The Third Sector Portal managed the full scope of the initiative's communications and mobilization strategy. This included designing the volunteer recruitment campaign, producing printed and digital awareness materials, coordinating media coverage, and managing the visual experience across all activity sites. A cohesive brand identity was developed to give the initiative a strong, recognizable presence that volunteers could rally behind with pride.
By the close of the initiative, hundreds of volunteers had participated across multiple locations, collectively contributing thousands of volunteer hours toward tangible environmental outcomes. The initiative was celebrated by partner organizations and local authorities alike as a model for community-led environmental action in the UAE.
